Von hier. Und dort.

From here. And there. “Stories about migration and integration.” is an exhibition in Neumarkt am Wallersee on the occasion of the Salzburger Provincial exhibition 2016. The exhibition poses questions on social affiliations and the elements that build our identity. Its subtitle “Stories of migration and integration in the area of Salzburg” refers to the fate of many immigrants, emigrants and refugees in and around Neumarkt. The small city, close to the Bavarian border has always witnessed strong movements of migration during its history. Today the city is eager to show a “Willkommenskultur” (litterally “welcoming culture”) where asylum seekers can use the Museum as a platform for encounter. The exhibition shows that movements of migration are not just a phenomenon of our time but has always been a part of this area of Salzburg with profound influence on local society.
The main elements used in the graphical language are the circle and the house: Circles build frontiers, either you are in it or outside of it. Overlapping circles create a shared interval, showing what’s common but also what’s different. The reduced form of a house refers not only to the feeling of being “at home” but also questions our definition of it: when can one truly say “I feel at home”?
